Through-beam photoelectric sensors

Through-beam photoelectric sensors consist of separate housings in which the transmitter and receiver are physically separated from each other. The transmitter aims its light directly at the receiver. As soon as an object interrupts the light beam, the voltage at the receiver drops, which triggers the switching function.
This principle makes it possible to detect opaque and reflective objects and enables long ranges. Throughbeam photoelectric sensors are robust and less susceptible to interference, making them particularly suitable for use in demanding conditions.
Through-beam Sensors by Tippkemper Matrix – Maximum Range and Reliability
When standard retro-reflective sensors reach their physical limits, through-beam photoelectric sensors are the superior choice for demanding industrial applications. By spatially separating the transmitter and receiver into two distinct housings, these sensors achieve the highest possible ranges and offer the greatest operational reserve on the market.
Tippkemper Matrix combines this proven detection principle with state-of-the-art explosion protection technology, certified for use in hazardous areas (ATEX / IECEx) and harsh industrial environments.
The Through-beam Advantage: Unmatched Penetration Power
The operating principle is simple yet extremely effective: The transmitter directs its light beam directly at the opposing receiver module. The switching function is triggered when this beam is interrupted. This setup offers decisive advantages:
- Detection of Challenging Objects: Reliable detection of mirrored, glossy, or jet-black objects, as the light does not rely on reflection from the object itself.
- High Excess Gain: Our high-performance sensors reliably penetrate dust, steam, fog, and heavy contamination on the lens face.
- Extreme Ranges: We offer solutions ranging from compact short-range sensors to high-power systems with ranges of up to 600 m.
A Versatile Portfolio for Every Installation
Our product range covers almost every industrial requirement. Choose from various housing designs and performance classes:
- Robust Threaded Housings: Available in M18 and M30 standards for easy mounting in existing brackets.
- Fork Sensors (Slot Sensors): Transmitter and receiver are mechanically aligned in a U-shape housing – ideal for conveyor belts and small parts detection.
- High-Performance Series (e.g., ILS): Designed for extreme applications requiring massive penetration power or long-distance monitoring.
- Laser Through-beam Sensors: For precise positioning tasks over long distances.
Certified Safety – ATEX, IECEx, and SIL
Many of our through-beam sensors are engineered not just for standard industry use, but specifically for potentially explosive atmospheres.
- Global Certifications: ATEX, IECEx, and CCC for worldwide compliance.
- Functional Safety: Models available with SIL 2 / PL c and SIL 3 / PL e (e.g., IGD series) for safety-critical loops.
- Interference Immunity: Different transmission frequencies prevent cross-talk when mounting multiple sensor pairs side-by-side.
Typical Industrial Applications
- Level Monitoring: Penetrating silos or tanks to detect limit levels (capable of sensing through sight glasses).
- Logistics & Bulk Materials: Monitoring long conveyor belts in dusty environments (e.g., coal, cement, wood processing).
- Outdoor Applications: Reliable operation even in fog, rain, or snow due to high functional reserves.
- Door & Gate Guarding: Securing large entrances, locks, and hangars.
