Filter Tear Detection with Retro-Reflective Photoelectric Sensor and Triple Mirror

Automatic Air Filter Monitoring for Clean Process Air

The integrity of air filters is a safety-critical requirement in many industrial processes. A torn or defective filter allows particulate contamination to enter ventilation or production systems unchecked – with potentially serious consequences for machinery, products, and operational safety.

With filter tear detection based on the ISD-2XC-IDX-OP retro-reflective sensor, Tippkemper-Matrix offers a precise, low-maintenance solution for continuous air filter monitoring.

Clear light path - clean air

Interrupted light path - Contaminated air

The condition of an air filter is monitored using the ISD-2XC-IDX-OP reflex light barrier with teach-in function and a triple mirror (40 mm). In the event of a fault, if the air filter tears, the reflex light barrier detects the dirt particles in the air.

Operating Principle: Free Light Path – Interrupted Light Path

The measurement principle is based on a free light path between the retro-reflective sensor and a triple mirror (Ø 40 mm), which reflects the emitted light beam precisely back to the sensor.

H3: Normal Operation – Clean Air The light path is unobstructed. The beam is reflected without interference, the output signal remains stable – the air filter is intact.

H3: Fault Condition – Filter Tear Detected If the filter tears, particulate matter enters the air stream and passes through the monitored light path. The airborne particles interrupt or scatter the beam measurably. The retro-reflective sensor immediately registers the change and outputs a switching signal – an emergency shutdown or alarm can be triggered without delay.

System Components

H3: Retro-Reflective Sensor ISD-2XC-IDX-OP with Teach-In Function The ISD-2XC-IDX-OP impresses with its straightforward commissioning thanks to the integrated teach-in function: the sensor is calibrated once to the specific installation conditions and automatically adjusts its switching threshold – no complex manual adjustment required.

H3: Triple Mirror 40 mm The triple mirror reflects the light beam back to the transmitter precisely and independent of angle – even with slight misalignment. This significantly increases mounting tolerance and simplifies installation in practice.
